Whether you like summer and beach vibes or wintery and romantic trips, we selected 7 memorable honeymoon destinations to inspire you and make this moment even more special!
Honeymoon: the first memories of a marriage
If you got engaged and started planning the wedding, you must know that the celebration doesn’t end at the reception – your planning should include the honeymoon as well.
The honeymoon trip is a special moment to make your first memories as a married couple, share stories of the wedding day, look ahead to your future together, and is also a chance to visit new places. Because of that, it is a must-have item for most couples.
Wedding budget
As mentioned, the honeymoon should be a part of the wedding planning, especially when it comes to your budget. Depending on the couple, you may have only one budget for the whole thing or two independent budgets, one for the wedding ceremony and reception and other for the honeymoon trip.
No matter what’s your case, your budget will help guide some decisions such as to travel in your country or abroad, how much you can spend on the accommodation, which attractions to visit, among others. So, keep that in mind when searching for your honeymoon destination!
Top 7 honeymoon destinations
The couple’s style and preferences (and the budget, of course!) will highly influence the honeymoon destination. It could be a place with many parties and attractions, a paradisiac beach, or even a snowy and romantic destination, depending on what you want.
If you are starting to look for a place to go or have doubts about it, here is our list of the top 7 honeymoon destinations around the world!
Beach destinations
If you and your loved one want to spend the first days of your marriage by the beach, you have to consider the seasons’ differences between the countries. Hence, you should look for the summer months and avoid the rainy periods of the year.
Another thing to take into account is that most beach destinations are packed on summer vacation, so if you want to avoid crowds consider going on the low season.
1. Maldives
Located in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is known for its magnificent beaches, turquoise water and its unique 26 coral atolls.
There are many islands and each one offers different types of accommodations, but the preferred ones for newlyweds are the resorts – besides their stunning bedrooms and residence options, their structure includes amazing restaurants and spas that create a romantic experience.
In addition to enjoying the beach, other activities you’ll find at Maldives are scuba diving, snorkeling, jet ski, dolphin watching tour, among others.
If you want the Maldives as your honeymoon destination, know that the best time to travel is between November and April because of the warm weather and low probability of rain. The peak season is around January to April – despite being busier during this period, you may find good accommodation deals on these dates.
2. Cancun
Located in Mexico, it is one of the honeymoon destinations that needs no introduction – not only Cancun has beautiful beaches, luxurious hotels and resorts, but its nightlife can also attract many couples.
While in Cancun, you can enjoy paradisiac beaches and water activities, infinity pools, and visit amazing places such as Cozumel and Chichén Itzá – the ancient Mayan ruin that is one of the seven wonders of the modern world.
The bars and nightclubs stand out for those who like to party. The places in Cancun offer nightly entertainments such as circus type performances, mime artists and competitions with customer participations.
December through May is the best period to go, and February and March have lower rainfalls. The low season is around April and May.
3. Brazilian Northeast
It is difficult to select only one destination in the Brazilian northeast to talk about. Jericoacoara, Maceió, Natal and Fernando de Noronha are some incredible honeymoon destinations options for you to explore.
In those places you’ll find different types of accommodations, from simple and small local places (known as “pousadas”) to hotels and luxurious all-inclusive resorts – it all depends on your budget.
When it comes to the best things to do, you can relax by the beaches, do water activities such as boat tours, diving and swimming around the coral reefs and sea life, or even be more adventurous and go on an ATV ride.
Nonetheless, the cities have amazing seafood restaurants, nightclubs and bars, and stores to discover local handicrafts.
The region has a great climate during the whole year but the best time to travel is between September and November. The high season is usually around December and January.
Winter honeymoon destinations
If you like the cold weather and the romantic vibe of snow-covered landscapes, cozy accommodations and hot cocoa or wine by a fireplace, a winter honeymoon destination may be perfect for you.
As well as for beach destinations, when looking for your winter wonderland trip you have to consider the weather conditions and seasons to make sure you arrive at the right time.
4. Bariloche
San Carlos de Bariloche, also known as Bariloche, is a city located in southern Argentina that enchants those who visit due to its incredible views of Lake Nahuel Huapi, the surrounding mountains and forests.
Skiing and snowboarding are the top activities you may do while in Bariloche, but you can also go horseback riding, trekking, and others. The region is also very popular for its craft chocolate – which you can taste and bring some home as souvenirs.
The period between July through September is the best one to go, and July and August are considered the high season – but also the months with the greatest amount of snow in the mountains.
Extra tip: Consider to extend your trip and visit Mendoza and Buenos Aires
If you stay in Bariloche, those cities are just a short flight away and are worth the visit!
Mendoza is known for its wineries, where you can take guided tours and do some wine tasting, while Buenos Aires offers historic museums and theaters to visit, in addition to outstanding Tango shows and its delicious local cuisine – you can’t go home without tasting some empanadas.
5. Switzerland
From snow activities and winter sports to relaxing in a thermal bath with Switzerland’s Alpine landscapes, this place is one of the most popular and romantic honeymoon destinations.
Zurich, Geneva and Zermatt are some of the cities where you can stay. All of them offer different types of accommodation – there are affordable hotel options as well as mesmerizing resorts perfectly located in the mountains, with restaurants, spas and other services.
Usually, the Alps are covered in snow during the whole year because of Switzerland’s mild temperatures. However, the best months to visit are April through June or September and October. If you really like the cold weather and winter sports, you may plan your visit around December through March as well.
Unique honeymoon destinations
As we mentioned in this post, the honeymoon trip is also an opportunity to meet new places and cultures. Because of that, we selected two (of many!) unique honeymoon destinations that are worth considering.
6. Japan
The unique culture, traditional food, magical gardens and historical temples and shrines are some of the many attractions you will find in Japan.
Each city has its charms, but a traditional itinerary for this honeymoon destination includes visiting Tokyo, Kyoto and the incredible Mount Fuji.
If you’d like to enjoy the cherry blossom season, the spring months are the best for your trip (March to May). However, the off-peak seasons occur in the summer and winter months (June to September, and December to mid-March, respectively).
7. Marrakech
Marrakech is the capital of Morocco and it is an unforgettable honeymoon destination due to its unique architecture, beautiful gardens, colorful marketplaces (known as “souks”) and much more.
While in Marrakech you can visit the Medina Quarter, enjoy the Jardin Majorelle (an outstanding botanical garden), explore the Bahia Palace museum and, of course, experience a hot air balloon ride with your loved one.
The mildest temperatures and therefore the best months to visit Marrakech are during spring (March through May) and fall months (September through November).
